At Oryx Desert Salt, we’re more than just a salt company—we’re a story of passion and a deep connection to the Kalahari Desert. Our journey began when founder Samantha Skyring, a single mom needing to get her life back together, sold her house to buy 34 tonnes of pure, mineral-rich salt from the remote Kalahari Desert. What started as a humble operation—packing salt grinders on her dining table—has grown into a global mission to share this extraordinary salt with the world.
Sourced from an ancient underground salt aquifer, Oryx Desert Salt is unprocessed, unrefined, and free from pollution or chemicals. Crystallised under the African sun, stars, and desert winds, it retains its natural balance of minerals and trace elements, making it a true gift from nature. Inspired by the majestic Oryx gazelle, which thrives in the desert by licking salt, which is essential for hydration, Oryx Desert Salt embodies resilience, purity, and the magic, beauty, and spirit of the Kalahari Desert.
MAKING AN IMPACT
Our proudest achievement? Securing a national listing with Whole Foods Market in the USA. This milestone saved us from a potential Covid crisis, pushed us to achieve international food safety certification, bring packaging in-house, and grow our team to 30 dedicated individuals hand-packing products to meet global demand.
This achievement taught us that South Africa has the resources and talent to compete on the global stage. By scaling our operations, we’ve created jobs, supported families, and showcased the potential of South African products internationally.
