When Uzair Osman left Durban as a newly graduated mechanical engineer with just £1,000 in his pocket, he wasn’t simply boarding a plane. He was walking away from certainty and a life his father lovingly set up for him. “My father bought me a brand-new four-bedroom house with a pool and a Polo GTI,” he remembers. “He was dumbfounded when I said, ‘No, I don’t need it. I’m going to England with £1,000.’”

To many, it looked reckless. To Uzair, aligned perfectly with his belief in responsibility, self-determination, and graft. “I’ve always believed in myself,” he says. “I’ve always been a strong believer that I can influence, I am responsible, I can make things happen, with the grace of God.”

Two decades later, that leap has crystallised into one of the most compelling South African success stories abroad – powered by clarity, courage, and service.

Leading at the Intersection of Risk, Technology, and National Infrastructure

Today, Uzair is the Managing Director of Asset Intelligence, part of the Galliford Try group. He leads teams protecting national infrastructure through integrated systems combining physical security, digital transformation, data, and AI-driven intelligence.

His world sits at the sharp edge of complexity – yet his value lies in making the complex simple. He is known for cutting through noise with precision and focus.

Alongside his MD role, he serves as a Non-Executive Director for the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and advises several UK businesses. Beneath it all is a philosophy that has shaped everything he leads and builds: “Everyone has brilliance.”

“I’m a strong believer that everyone has brilliance,” he says. “Our responsibility as leaders is to help people detect what’s brilliant about them so they can be their best.”

This isn’t a slogan. It’s his operating system.

Uzair’s superpower is simplifying chaos. “I’m able to simplify complexity to give businesses clarity of thought and real laser focus on how to execute to be successful.” His ability to reflect others’ brilliance back to them – unlocking confidence and direction – sets him apart as both a leader and a culture-builder.

Outside the boardroom, Uzair is an avid NFT collector and early Web3 participant, even sporting a Bored Ape Yacht Club PFP as part of his digital identity.

A Career Forged Through Courage, Grit, and Representation

Uzair’s ascent is extraordinary – not because he’s lucky, but because he refused to dilute who he is. A young South African. A person of colour. A practising Muslim in a UK industry with almost no one who looked like him in senior leadership.

He remembers the moment his career became bigger than himself: “When I was offered a directorship, a Muslim guy came to me and said, ‘Do it for us. Do it so that we can see that if we have the ability and the desire, we could also do it.’ That was the reason why I took it.”

From that point, his ambition grew beyond personal success. “South Africans see diversity as a strength. We challenge openly. We are good humans at the end of it all – and I think the UK saw that in me.”

His next ambition is bold: to become one of the first Muslims in the UK construction industry to sit on an executive board, reshaping who gets a seat at the table.

Family and Faith

Despite the seniority and stability he has built in the UK, Uzair’s grounding force is his family.

“My missus has been the bedrock of everything,” he says. “She’s given our kids a grounding while I chase the world from a business point of view.”

He and his wife – childhood sweethearts – built their life from scratch. Four children. A farm in Wilmslow, South Manchester. A home shaped through grit and sacrifice.

Vision for South Africa’s Next Chapter

Uzair’s connection to South Africa has never been about geography alone. It is about responsibility, perspective, and using what he has learned to create value that travels beyond borders.

“Everyone thinks the grass is greener on the other side,” he says. “But the real question is how we use what we’ve gained to make a difference where it matters.”

From the UK, Uzair continues to focus on building bridges – between markets, ideas, and people – applying global expertise in AI, infrastructure, automation, and high-performance leadership to challenges that matter deeply to South Africans, wherever they may be.

“We have the opportunity now to take all the great stuff we’ve learned in the West and apply it with intent,” he reflects. “That’s how you create impact – through clarity, execution, and leadership.”

South Africa, in his view, already has the foundations: climate, culture, ingenuity, and resilience. What elevates nations – and organisations – is the quality of leadership applied to those assets.

“Let’s focus our skill sets, our entrepreneurial spirit, our care for the country,” he says. “That’s how you build something better. Why not?”

A Proud South African, Playing the Long Game

In the UK, he is regularly asked that familiar question: “Where are you really from?” His answer never changes. “I tell people: I’m South African. What ethnicity? I’m South African-British. Well, that doesn’t exist. Well – that’s who I am.”

And maybe that’s the point. Uzair Osman doesn’t need a category. He’s a South African original – shaped by Durban warmth, British precision, global ambition, and a purpose bigger than borders.

His story proves that going away doesn’t mean letting go – and that success abroad can be used to build bridges back home.
