Winning The Away Game – Ken Kinsey-Quick
“When entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem enablers all come together to promote their region with one voice—magic happens.”
From a Sunday lunch experiment to an internationally recognised brand, Banhoek Chilli Oil is blazing a flavour trail from the sun-drenched soils of the Stellenbosch Winelands to kitchen counters across the UK and many other countries. Founded by South African entrepreneur Ken Kinsey-Quick and co-founded by his brother-in-law Adi Meintjies, this handcrafted chilli-infused oil is more than just a condiment—it’s a mission-driven product with global ambitions and deep local roots.
From Braais to Britain
“I used to live in the UK for around 20 years,” explains Ken, “but moved back to South Africa after selling my business there.” It was in Stellenbosch, at the heart of South Africa’s wine country, where Banhoek Chilli Oil (BCO) was born. Disillusioned by the inconsistency of chilli oils on restaurant tables, Ken and Adi took matters into their own hands—literally.
What started as a hobby turned into a culinary obsession, testing over 60 combinations of chillies and edible oils. Their breakthrough? A perfectly balanced chilli oil that enhances rather than overpowers your dishes’ flavours with just the right bite,” says Ken. The perfect bite of flavour is their brand promise.
Crafted with Conscience
From the outset, Banhoek Chilli Oil was founded on three principles: quality, consistency, and flavour. The chillies are sun-dried and handcrushed, infused into golden, GMO-free canola oil grown in the Cape Floral Kingdom—one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. It’s this uniquely South African terroir, rich in fynbos vegetation, that gives Banhoek Chilli Oil its distinct depth and flavour profile.
But this isn’t just a tale of artisanal production; it’s a business with a heart. “We’ve embedded local economic empowerment into the DNA of the company,” Ken notes. One of the most powerful examples of this is the story of Sibongile Mateyisi. Initially hired as a garden labourer, Sibongile’s
drive and potential caught Ken’s eye. He was brought into the production team, trained from scratch, and, within two years, was running production. Today, Sibongile is not just the production manager —he’s a shareholder.
Ken says: “We’ve always believed that if you show the right attitude, we’ll teach the skills. Our goal is to uplift our community, one opportunity at a time.”
The UK Launchpad
With a strong presence established in South Africa, Banhoek Chilli Oil set its sights on the UK as its first international market. “Having lived in the UK for two decades, it made sense to use it as our global launchpad,” says Ken. The mission? To become to chilli oil what Tabasco is to chilli sauce: a household staple.
It’s an ambitious goal but one firmly within reach. The brand has already started hiring in the UK and is actively looking to expand its retail footprint and distribution across the country. “To achieve what we envision, we need doors opened—especially in the FMCG space,” Ken emphasises. “Fellow South Africans in the UK can help by introducing us to their networks, opening conversations with retailers, and most importantly—by putting Banhoek Chilli Oil on their shelves and tables.”
A South African Product for Global Palates
Banhoek Chilli Oil is proudly South African, from its ingredients to its ethos. Each bottle is infused not just with heat but with heritage—carrying the taste of Stellenbosch and the values of a business that believes in sustainability, integrity, and community upliftment.
The product’s process is meticulously crafted: chillies are grown in the Banhoek Valley and sun-dried to lock in their vivid colour and natural sweetness, then hand-crushed and infused using precision induction heating. The oil is passed through a 16-stage filter, ensuring that the product is as consistent in London as it is in the Banhoek Valley.
Halal, Kosher, vegan-friendly, and FSSC 22000 certified, BCO is well-positioned for the discerning UK consumer looking for quality, sustainability, and something a little lekker on the plate.
Winning the Away Game
Ken’s entrepreneurial spirit has always been driven by a desire to build something meaningful. “Our mission is for Banhoek Chilli Oil to be the number one chilli oil brand in the world by 2030,” he says. “And we’re doing it our way—by staying true to our South African roots, supporting our community, and crafting a product that genuinely brings joy to people’s meals.”
Winning the away game, for Ken and the team, is not just about entering new markets—it’s about exporting a piece of South Africa’s culinary soul to the world.
