Winning The Away Game – John Sanei

“You don’t realise how tough and prepared you are until you step out into the wider world.”

As an official Ambassador of The Lekker Network, I’m deeply proud to be part of a community that celebrates South Africans doing remarkable things around the world. We’re proof that talent, resilience, and creativity don’t belong only to Europe or America: they run deep in South Africa’s veins. Wherever I travel, I see our people standing tall, showing the world what’s possible when you’ve been forged in such a challenging, complex, and inspiring country.

Lessons from Home

Growing up in South Africa was like training at high altitude. You don’t realise how tough and prepared you are until you step out into the wider world. Our country teaches you to hustle with limited resources, to stay creative in the cracks, and to build resilience when the odds are stacked against you. That upbringing shaped everything I’ve done since.

Falling and Rising

I didn’t set out to be a futurist or global speaker. My first ambition was simple: I just didn’t want to be poor. By my twenties, I had half a dozen businesses and thought I’d cracked the code, until I lost it all at 31. Bankruptcy forced me to face the truth: running from fear is not the same as running towards vision.

That failure reset my compass. I launched a consultancy, then discovered a passion for sharing ideas on stage. One talk led to one book, which turned into twelve, six of them bestsellers. More than the titles or accolades, it’s the chance to spark new thinking in others that drives me.

Playing on the Global Stage

In 2019, I moved to Dubai to test myself internationally. Since then, I’ve worked with governments and organisations around the world, and in 2025, I was named among the top five futurists globally. Those honours are humbling, but what excites me most is knowing that South Africans can thrive anywhere.

South Africans Belong on the World Stage

I believe we don’t see nearly enough South Africans stepping into global conversations. Our training ground at home, smaller markets, heavier challenges, and complex history, produces individuals who are adaptable, resourceful, and world-class. When we step out, we discover just how strong we really are.

Home Will Always Be Home

Even as I live in Dubai and travel around the world, South Africa runs through me. Nothing compares to the scent of soil after rain, a boerewors roll at a braai, or the sight of Table Mountain from a plane window. I return often, because while I may play away games abroad, my heart and my spirit remain firmly rooted at home.

Be lekker. Be bold. Transform differently.
